José-Daniel Castellon

With a passion for sports,
oenology, literature and of course….music, French
flutist, José-Daniel Castellon, is considered
to be one of the most outstanding and versatile
musicians in Europe. José-Daniel
studied the flute with Marius Beuf before entering
the “Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique”
in Lyon at age 16 to study with legendary flutist,
Maxence Larrieu. In 1983, while still at the
conservatory, José-Daniel won the Geneva International
Music Competition. One year later he graduated
with honors, completing the “Diplôme National
d’Etudes Supérieures Musicale”.
Jose-Daniel’s orchestral
career began at age 19 playing with the National
Opera Orchestra of Lyon, conducted by John Eliot
Gardiner. Then in 1989, on a personal invitation
from Emmanuel Krivine, José was appointed principal
flute of the National Orchestra of Lyon. From
1990 to 2004, José-Daniel was principal flutist
of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra in Switzerland,
where he performed under musical director’s
Jesus-Lopez Cobos and Christian Zacharias successively.
José-Daniel is one
of the foremost teachers of our times. Professor
of Flute at Lyon’s “Conservatoire National de
Région” for 13 years, he recently accepted the
post of Professor of Flute at the “Haute Ecole
de Musique” in Lausanne, Switzerland. José-Daniel
has given masterclasses throughout Europe as
well as in Brazil, Korea, Syria, and China.
He has taught at many prestigious festivals
such as the Tibor Varga Festival, the Academy
at les Arcs and the Palma Music Festival.
With a particular interest
in chamber music, José-Daniel co-founded the
Trio “Pierre de Ronsard” with colleagues, Isabelle
Moretti, harp and Nicolas Bône, viola. He performs
regularly with other chamber formations and
often appears as a soloist and recording artist.
José-Daniel’s next CD (2007) will include the
complete concerto works of André Jolivet and
Frank Martin and will be accompanied by the
Chamber Orchestra of Lausanne.
