Stephan Rieckhoff

Stephan Rieckhoff was born in 1953 in Stuttgart. At the age of seven he took up piano , but soon began taking private cello lessons and began focusing on the cello as his principal instrument. During his childhood Stephan undertook cello studies with Irene Spittler, Andr¨¦ Navarra at the Northwest German Musicacademy of Detmo¨¦d and later in Freiburg with Christophe Henkel.

As a young professional Rieckhoff attended several masterclasses, such as one with Radu Aldulescu at the Menuhin School in 1981, Janos Starker and Pierre Fournier. Rieckhoff simultaneously began developing his very successful career as an orchestral musician. From 1976-1978 he played as principal cello in the S¨¹dwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim under the direction of Paul Angerer. He then took a position playing with the Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of Rafael Kubelik before taking up position as principal cello at l¡¯Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.

As well as his orchestral work, Stephan Rieckhoff¡¯s career has also included solo work, in particular with l¡¯OSR and le Bachcollegium M¨¹nchen. He also plays much chamber music, in particular with his brother Leonhard Rieckhoff.
