ADDRESS BY CHANTAL JUILLET
Director of Chamber Music Faculty
& Artistic Associate
(video)
My name is Chantal Juillet.
I am a concert violinist, and I have directed
two chamber music festivals as well – Saratoga, New York and one
in Sapporo, Japan – the Pacific Music Festival. So when I was
asked to join this venture in Guangzhou, I did so with a lot of
excitement and enthusiasm for many reasons. But I will tell you
two of the most important.
First of all, I will be heading the Chamber
Music Department. To me, chamber music is a very essential component
in music training at any level. Being a musician is very often
a solitary state of affair; so to be able to play chamber music
which requires a minimum of two players, there suddenly comes
an exchange of ideas, a dialogue with another person, becoming
aware of emotions that are filtering through music and being curious
and anticipating what the other person might do - all these are
very close to the human nature of conversation.
With regard to the team of tutors we will
bring to you, we have picked not only the best players in their
fields but also great teachers who are able to express our way
of preparing certain repertoire in chamber music, our vision of
western music and to teach you a way of learning and working.
The second reason (which maybe is more selfish)
is that I am very fascinated with China. I have been to China
many times for short periods of time, but I think China has a
lot to teach us culturally and historically; so I believe that
with the combination of us and you, East meets West, it is bound
to end up being a great venture with the Canton International
Summer Music Academy. I very much look forward to be with you
in July.
